Animal House Veterinary Hospital would like to help you get your pet ready for spring!
Heartworm Disease is a potentially deadly disease that can damage a dog’s heart and lungs and is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. If your dog is not already on Heartgard, Trifexis, or Sentinel, you should start them NOW to prevent this infection. These oral preventatives are safe and effective. The vets at Animal House can help you decide which one is right for YOUR pet.
Fleas are blood-sucking parasites that infest the skin of your dog or cat. They spend their entire adulthood on your pet, but the larval stages (egg and pupae) contaminate the ENVIRONMENT. Your pet may become infested while outdoors or even INDOORS if there are larval stages in the environment. Fleas are responsible for flea allergy dermatitis, an inflammatory skin condition in dogs and cats, but can be present with ABSOLUTELY NO SYMPTOMS. Fleas also spread the tapeworm Dipylidium caninum to dogs and cats. Gross! Ask your vet about which flea and tick prevention product is right for you! We carry NexGard (an oral flea and tick preventative), Vectra, Frontline, Revolution (topical flea preventatives), Trifexis (oral flea and heartworm combo) and Sentinel (which contains an insect growth regulator). We also carry Capstar, which can be given orally to kill all adult fleas on your pet within 24 hours.
Ticks are present in the environment starting in spring and are ready to JUMP onto your dog or outdoor cat. Ticks require multiple species to complete their life cycle and due to the prevalence of wildlife in our area we deal with high levels of ticks in our practice. Ticks transmit insidious and deadly diseases such as Lyme, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and are responsible for tick paralysis. Ask us which tick prevention is right for your pet! We carry NexGard, Frontline and Vectra.
